McDowell, the King of Match Play

Top-seeded Graeme McDowell won the Volvo World Match Play Championship, after fighting back for the Thai Thongchai Jaidee defeated in the final Sunday. McDowell made amends for his short defeat at the hands of Nicolas Colsaerts in the final of last year, as it has wound up a victory 2 & 1 in the lay-out of spectacular cliffs of Thrace in Bulgaria. Having overcome Branden Grace in his semi-final earlier in the day, McDowell showed patience and nerves as it has redesigned an early deficit against Jaidee to secure his second title of the season - the first came to Harbour Town last month.

In final position, McDowell had not trailed in any of his matches all week, but, after Jaidee made a fine back and forth to halve the first hole, what has changed, from the second when his opponent rolled home a 30-footer for birdie move 1up. The former paratrooper, then extended his lead at the par-five fourth hole as another neat piece of interference got his second birdie. He should have made more progress in the next but missed a putt short birdie after McDowell had courageously chosen to abandon certain plants before making a vertical coupling-clutch of hers to save what would prove a valuable by.

This escape seems to galvanize McDowell that reduces by half the head with his first birdie of the round at the seventh and the Ulsterman then made a series of Rhodesia putts at the turn to stay only to drift. He was back on terms after the 12th hole when Jaidee was unable to extricate himself from an awkward place and carded his first bogey of the day. All square with five to play, this is the Thailand who blinked first as he pulled his left average reader on 14 and having been obliged to hack out on the side of thick undergrowth, fell behind for the first time that he could not save an equal footing.

McDowell turned the screw with a wedge sublime five feet four-by-15 and, when Jaidee missed his 15-footer for birdie, he sank the putt that ensued to move 2up with three to play. After that they have reduced by half the 16th by five, the end came at the short 17th hole where another was enough for McDowell sealed the victory and the cheque for the winner of €800 000. Happy winner then told Sky Sports: "it's very special. It is a very prestigious event, I can't tell you how excited I am to win it. »

McDowell backs Bulgaria debut

Graeme McDowell says European Tour golfers were 'bowled over' by their first taste of Bulgaria which hosted last week's Volvo World Match Play Championship. The Gary Player-designed Thracian Cliffs was the venue for the event at the Black Sea resort close to Kavarna. McDowell won the 24-man tournament by beating Thongchai Jaidee in the final and the Irishman said: "It will sound easy for me to say because I am standing here with a magnificent trophy in my hands. "But I think if you ask all of the players who came here this week they will all tell you how enjoyable it has been to come to Bulgaria.

"Bulgaria is obviously a fairly new golfing country but hopefully we have helped start something special in this beautiful land and we can see a lot more people taking up the game here and really enjoying the sport." Thracian Cliffs has been described as the 'Pebble Beach of Europe', a reference to the championship links on the Monterey Peninsular in California. South African Thomas Aiken, who reached the semi-finals last week, added: "It's a fantastic golf course with a spectacular view. "It is also a great course to play, so all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the week."

Per Ericsson, president of Volvo Event Management, said: "We take great pride and we take enormous satisfaction that we are the first to bring a full European Tour event to Bulgaria. "Thracian Cliffs provided a wonderful stage for this great tournament and everything about the venue was wonderfully received by the players.
