Festivities kick-off with a pre-tournament dinner on Wednesday, August 7, at The Denver ChopHouse & Brewery where Mr. Fingers meets golfers, signs autographs and talks about his 17-year career, earning election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame -- only the second relief pitcher to do so -- and winning him the honor of having his number retired by two teams (Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers). The dinner event is sponsored by CoBiz Insurance, a longtime underwriter of this annual party for tournament players and their guests.
Then, on Thursday morning, August 8, the spotlight swings to the private Sanctuary Golf Course, created by RE/MAX co-founders Dave and Gail Liniger, where access is reserved for charity tournament participants. A full day begins at 9:30 a.m. with practice time, lunch, an 18-hole best ball tournament and dinner, and wraps up with awards at 7:00 p.m. Rollie Fingers is on hand to autograph baseballs, mingle with players and compete in the tournament.
Mr. Fingers joins a list of baseball celebrities who have supported Volunteers of America's Legends Golf Tournament over the past decade, including Brooks Robinson, Bob Feller, Gaylord Perry, Andres Galarraga, Goose Gossage, Fergie Jenkins, Harmon Killebrew, Steve Carlton and Dante Bichette. Traditionally, each year, the featured baseball player’s autographed jersey sets off the most enthusiastic live auction bidding.
Entry fees begin at $5,000 per foursome and sponsorship and co-sponsorship opportunities are available. Funds raised benefit Volunteers of America Colorado Chapter’s family strengthening services for families moving out of homelessness and domestic violence. The heart of the program is a list of 10 golf etiquette fundamentals (http://www.play240golf.com/etiquette-rules/) (click here) that can be shared among golfers. The first fundamental according to Aronson is the most important and simply states “Be Ready to Play When It Is Your Turn.” Aronson explained, “Golfers that are not ready to play when it is their turn is the single biggest reason for slow play. Most of the remaining rules address all of the bad habits many golfers have that cause them to not be ready.”
One of the bad habits 240 GOLF (http://www.play240golf.com/) addresses for example is many golfers take their golf glove off after the tee shot then wait until it is their turn for the approach shot to replace it. Fundamental #2 simply states: “Put your golf glove on BEFORE your turn, not during your turn.” This bad habit by itself may not be a big issue. When you combine it with one or more of other bad habits such as multiple practice swings, or not having selected a club to use, the time it takes to complete a shot is way too long.
Aronson decided an education program all golfers could share was needed to teach slow golfers how to be ready to play their shot in a reasonable time. After careful study and much research the 10 rules were written. Once written it became clear the rules are simply nothing more than good golf etiquette fundamentals. No different than not stepping on playing partners putting line. Aronson explained it, “most golfers readily adopt etiquette rules when learning the game. And when they are alerted to an etiquette infraction they usually respond. It seemed logical to simply consider pace-of-play rules as good golf etiquette.”
Most importantly, Aronson calculated the average time per stroke it takes a foursome to play a round of golf in 4-hours on most golf courses. All of the factors were considered including whether walking or riding, time to look for errant shots, a stop at the turn, and penalty shots. At the web site a complete breakdown of a round is outlined (see the math here). The simple answer is golfers should be able to complete a golf shot in 30 seconds or less. This holds true for most if not all shots. By following the etiquette fundamentals golfers have no problem completing a golf shot in 30 seconds without feeling rushed. According to Aronson the average time for all shots taken during a round will be around 23 seconds.
To get this program off the ground Aronson is asking golfers frustrated by slow play to get involved. “There are two simple ways golfers like me who want to improve pace of play can participate. We are asking golfers to wear a golf hat with a 240 GOLF embroidered logo. When other golfers ask you about it, which they will, tell them 240 GOLF is a set of golf etiquette fundamentals to help golfers finish a round in 240 minutes (4hours). Then hand them the 240 GOLF etiquette card, You will receive a supply of the cards with the purchase of the hat. Second, send your favorite golf pro an email with a link to the to the Play 240 GOLF website asking them to support the program. In addition to the pace-of-play etiquette card there are additional low cost, merchandising items for golf courses to promote Play 240 GOLF.

HVGC has recently completed an extensive renovation of its historic clubhouse, updating the clubhouse exterior and all of its dining rooms. “This renaming is in keeping with HVGC’s desire to maintain an updated facility while respecting the club’s history,” said Bill Shaw, HVGC General Manager.
Dr. Pierson was a community leader in Hopewell, serving as a public official, physician and dedicated volunteer. He was born in Lawrence Township, and received his early education at Rosedale School and Pennington Seminary. He started his career as a pharmacist in Bordentown and later went to medical school at the Physicians and Surgeons College in Baltimore. He came to Hopewell, where he became one of the leading physicians in the state. He was elected a member ex officio of the New Jersey State Medical Society, the first doctor to be so honored. He served for over fifteen years as a member of the Mercer County Republican Committee, was Mayor of Hopewell for four terms, and was on the Hopewell School Board for 17 years, 15 of which as president. He was president of the Hopewell Board of Health for 25 years, and served as medical inspector of the Hopewell School for 10 years. He was also a director of the Hopewell National Bank and Physician–in-Chief for Saint Michael’s Orphanage. He was an avid sportsman, and was president of the Hopewell Athletic Club for over 25 years. He enjoyed both baseball and golf.
Dr. Pierson and George Wells, who inherited what was then the Glenmore Stud Farm in 1913, conceived the idea of building a golf course on the Wells farm. The club was incorporated in 1927, with Dr. Pierson elected as the club’s first president, and serving in that capacity for ten years.
Attending the dedication ceremony will be two grandsons of T.A. Pierson, T.A. Pierson III and Kester R. Pierson. T.A. Pierson III used to caddy for his grandfather and others at the club beginning in 1932. Today, he is a retired oil and gas geologist, and Kester Pierson is a director in the Princeton law firm of Mason, Griffin & Pierson, PC.
“Dr. Theodore A. Pierson was devoted public official, physician and surgeon,” said Kevin B. McQuade, president of HVGC’s board of directors. “He was HVGC’s President for 10 years; we think he would be proud of the way HVGC continues to live up to his vision: a place where you play golf the way it was meant to be played, walking and no tee times; a place where friends and family gather to enjoy all that Hopewell Valley Golf Club has to offer. We can think of no better way to honor our founding father.”
About Hopewell Valley Golf Club: Hopewell Valley Golf Club is a member-owned full service club located in central Hopewell Township. The club offers an 18-hole walking golf course, multiple tennis courts, swimming pools, paddle tennis, and a range of dining options. Dining and banquet facilities are open to the public for business and personal events. Golf, tennis, and swim outings, and summer camps for children are also available.

Built in 1994, Mission Hills is situated just over the border from Hong Kong, in a stretch of land between Shenzhen and Dongguan. Its two main sites are easily reachable via Hong Kong Airport, and there’s even a mini-bus pick up from several Hong Kong hotels.
Luxury and service
I was booked in to stay at the Dongguan Hotel as the Shenzhen complex was closed for complete refurbishment. As I pulled up to the hotel I was met by Mona Li, the Director of Brand Development and my contact for the two-day stay. Walking through the opulent lobby to the premier check-in desk I very quickly realised that the Mission Hills experience is not just about size, but also about luxury and service.
My accommodation, a Grande Premiere Room, allowed me to enjoy personal butler service, a complimentary breakfast, evening cocktails and access to the Premiere Lounge. The room was sumptuous and modern with stunning views of the lake and the 18th hole of the course that I would later be playing. The personal welcome on the TV screen was a nice finishing touch.
Wealthy customers
As I settled in and unpacked, a fresh bowl of fruit was delivered just in case I felt peckish. After refreshing quickly I headed down to meet Mona for lunch.Walking to the Dongguan clubhouse (which happens to be the world’s largest clubhouse), I got a sense of the wealthy customers that Mission Hills has been built to serve. On our way to the World Restaurant we passed through an avenue of shops representing some of the largest luxury brands – all which would look at home in any high-end shopping mall around the world. Apart from the lavishness of the place it’s obvious that here golf is “king”. There are TV screens everywhere showing highlights of golf from competitions around the world – all on Mission Hills’ own television station.
Glorious meal
The menu for the set lunch had my mouth watering. To get the taste buds going I was first served an appetiser of ‘Tuna with Sesame, and Vegetable and Walnut Salad, Spicy Tomato and Seafood Soup’, followed by ‘Baked Garoupa with Crab Meat in Champagne Cream Sauce on Angel Hair Pasta with Seasonal Vegetables,’ and finished with ‘Tiramisu’. All beautifully presented and expertly cooked as you would expect.
After such a glorious meal it seemed sacrilege to rush off, but my tee time was approaching and I needed to get ready for the highlight of my trip.
Olazábal’s signature course
Of the five courses at the Dongguan I was to play the Olazábal Course, which is José Maria Olazábal’s inaugural Signature course and one of the clubs strongest tests. This course is used for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup. It plays to 7,300 yards and boasts 151 bunkers (including 24 on the 15th hole alone), reflecting Olazábal’s reputation as a master with the sand wedge. It is also considered to be the prettiest course in the Mission Hills armoury.
I couldn’t wait; I just hoped my golf was ready for the challenge. I was introduced to my caddy, Mimi (all Mission Hills caddies are female and undergo a minimum of three months training), and found that her English was excellent. Once we had loaded up the cool box with water and towels, as the temperature was a modest 34°C, I was ready for the task at hand......
